Storm Amanda Emergency Appeal
In response to the destruction and damage to land and crops caused by Storm Amanda on 31st May 2020
Wellsprings UK launched an emergency appeal to aid the recovery operation.
The appeal is now closed. Any subsequent donations received will be used to further the ongoing work of Wellsprings in El Salvador.
On 31st May 2020 Storm Amanda hit El Salvador causing widespread flooding and devastation. In the subsistence farming community of El Tular there has been serious damage to the land, destroying corn that has already been planted. Corn from the previous harvest is almost finished and most of those affected will not have the money to replant. It is estimated that at least 100 families from Los Pintines and El Tular have lost their entire harvest or at least part of it. Until the rain is over the full extent of the damage to crops, streets and houses cannot be quantified. Fortunately, there has been no loss of life but villagers cannot leave the community due to the swell of the rivers. As the community relies predominantly on corn for its source of food and livelihood, emergency supplies and aid will be a vital part of its recovery. A newly-installed water system which was to provide clean drinking water has suffered due to the rains. A part of the pipe is lost and the water service is suspended. Repairs will not be possible until the rain ceases. All this is happening in the middle of the Covid crisis and strict quarantine measures. Food supplies and access are already restricted and food prices have been rising.
