Celebration in adversity

El Tular Celebrates its “Harvest Festival” 2014

On Saturday the 16th August the El Tular community held its annual “Maize Festival” as usual to celebrate the importance of the maize crop in the life of the people from time immemorial. Their “Youth Committee”, “Women’s Committee”, The Civil Defence Commission, The Community Association were all involved for weeks in preparations for the day. The event was also host to representatives from the mayoralty, El Balsamo Association and invitees.

This year, as a result of the exceptionally dry season and high temperatures, maize production over the whole of El Salvador was down by 39 or 40 percent, and our community was no exception. But that did not prevent the girls and boys, women and men offering through their folk art and menus their thanks for such harvest as they did have. But, as the Chair of the Community Association said in his opening speech, it is also a wake-up call to all of us, communities and authorities to protect the environment and safeguard the world’s harvest. And for us that means particularly the harvests of heroic communities like El Tular.
