Better Environment Project

Photos of the work with young people involved in the Better Environment project in the community of El Tular - May 2021

Thanks to the generosity of St Thomas' Church, Delph, near Oldham, a new project has been started to plants trees for reafforestation and crop diversification, whilst teaching the young people about care for the environment. The project is being led by Allan Martell from the NGO Balsamo who is also bringing in technical assistance. See the progress made by December 2021.

This is the riverbed at the end of April after almost six months without rain. The river tends have a reduced flow from December, when the rainy season ends.

These photos are from the first meeting with the young people where it was decided on the species of seeds that needed to be collected to start the nursery.

The young people collected more than 400 seeds of various fruit species, they have done it with great interest and enthusiasm. However, at last week's meeting the technician explained that some seeds were not in good condition, that there was a need to collect others and others we will take some more and also fruit plants ready to sow.

At the moment, the young people are going to their classes at school two or three times a week due to Covid 19, and they participate in the project on the days that they do not have classes.

Training activities on environmental issues will be given, initially with the youth group, but we hope to expand it in June to a group of adults from the community. The technician will meet with the youth group to continue with the fruit plant nursery process.

400 seeds of mango, marañón and capote were collected and ordered.
