The first tranche of emergency funds (over £1,000) was received in El Tular at the beginning of July and spent on emergency food packages for 152 families most urgently in need after damage to crops from Tropical Storm Amanda. The supplies were purchased locally in Sonsonate by Bálsamo (our NGO partner) and representatives from the El Tular-Wellsprings Committee. As the Community was in quarantine and at risk from Covid-19, safety procedures were produced by Bálsamo and adopted for the food collection.
The appeal money raised far exceeded our expectations. A second payment of over £2,000 has been made to El Tular at the beginning of August. Having liaised with Bálsamo and the El Tular committee we agreed that this funding could be prioritised for the following activities:
Repairs to the road, paths, infrastructure and other facilities caused by Storm Amanda
For any health costs including treatment and medicines (access to healthcare was limited following the storm, many children are suffering with a stomach bug)
For drought-related problems, for food, seeds and loans - (the community fears an impending drought)
For Covid-19 related problems, for example, due to lack of work, ill-health, social-distancing issues, masks and hygiene requirements
We also suggested the El Tular committee put aside an amount of money for emergencies that may occur later in the year due to storms, drought and Covid-19 etc
Whilst the education of young people is being hampered by Covid-19, any remaining funds could be used to further the internet mast project and youth centre in order to assist the youth with remote learning.
The food distribution. A board was displayed showing pictures of the UK committee, with a tribute to our founder Brian's wife Muriel who died recently.
Message from Jose, 6th July 2020:
"As a humble community, we send our greetings and say thank you from all the people you guys have been able to help with the funds you sent. People are very grateful. "
Storm Amanda damaged the main road leading to the community, hindering access to the village. A small precarious path has to be used round the outside fence of the school.
